How often do you renew a high risk work licence?
Last checked 27 October 2026
Short answer
A high risk work licence expires five years after it is granted. In Queensland you get a renewal notice 4 to 6 weeks before the expiry date.
Which jobs need one
You need a high risk work licence for work such as operating a forklift, cranes and hoists, rigging and dogging, scaffolding and pressure equipment.
An employer must not let you do this work unless you hold the licence and give written evidence of it.
Renewing in Queensland
- The expiry date is printed in the bottom right corner of your licence card.
- A renewal notice is sent 4 to 6 weeks before expiry, so keep your postal address and email up to date.
- Renew online through High Risk Work Licence Online Services. Australia Post and Transport and Main Roads centres don't process renewals.
Interstate licences
- Current photographic high risk work licences from any Australian state or territory are recognised nationally.
- Queensland lets you renew an interstate licence if it expires within three months, or expired no more than 12 months ago.
- Old non-photographic licences from other states are no longer valid.
